Featured blogger question : The Road Home.

On a larger scale The Road Home deals with how the growth and change. Specifically how change can negatively affect people and places. In between the story of  death of the father and the shrinking village was a love story.  Why do you think the story was told this way and meaning do you draw from it?

  2. I think that the story was told the way it was because it shows that every person or place has a story to tell. Times changes, events happen and places become obsolete, but by taking the time to listen and learn everything and everyone has something significant to share. I don't think the love story means nearly as much without the story at the beginning and the end. -Tara

  3. Oh I like this question it actually makes you have to think. I believe that the reason they threw this love story into the film was to show that even when times are bad, there is still going to be someone or something that keeps you going day by day. It showed the obstacles that the two had to go through in order to be together and bringing the story in with the death of one of them you were able to see just how sad the significant other was (in this case the mother) it shows just how amazing and true their love was, and that this man was going to be greatly missed not only by her but the community as well, who all come together at the end of the film to bring him back home. -Cassie

  4. I think the story was told this way for two reasons:
    1. To show that times change, but every place and every person has a history.
    2. To show that true love never dies.
Throughout the film, we are switched between two realities, past and present. As cliched as it sounds, it is impossible to have an appreciation for the present without knowing the past. By understanding the past of Di and Changyu's love, we are more likely to understand and appreciate the importance of carrying Changyu's coffin to Di in the present. We also are able to become familiar with the characters as they were, and as they are, which, in a way, can make us emotionally connected to the character's and their story.
Secondly, we can see that from past to present, Di's love for Changyu never diminishes. She stays loyal to her husband, even in death. She continues to sit by the schoolhouse, as she did for so many years before his death, after his death. She also fervently makes a cloth for Changyu's coffin with the same love and tenacity that she had crafted the cloth for the schoolhouse Changyu taught at many years ago.

  5. I think the film was made that way because the love story was the most important element in the film. Times and traditions changed but the love between them was true and remained strong. The story surrounding the love story set the tone and the context for the audience. - Stacey

  6. I would have to agree with Stacey. Love is the same no matter what. The film shows throughout the community love is present but shown in different ways. For example, we know that the grandfather loved Pia despite anything he said out of anger. His actions spoke louder than anything he had spoken. I also think that is present in the Maori culture as well. No matter how much the younger brother rebelled in the film he still practiced the Maori culture and was there to attempt to save the whales. You don't have to try at love, it just happens sometimes.
